“The stay was just fantastic. The fantastic boss, Shirley amazed me with her understanding by checking in with us before we arrive. Her personalized approach in sharing with us what we need to know can be described with one word “BINGO”. We get what we want to know, and her input on our itinerary just made our trip better. Thanks to her that we managed to squeeze Pulau Perhentian as one of our destinations, not forgetting the herbal steam bath at Wat Pothikyan. All in all, we have a wonderful stay here and we like to hangout at her common hall.” – 9.3/10, Chong C.

7. Pahang, Cameron Highlands: Rain Forest Inn
Price: From RM 169.81 with RM 25 cashback
User Rating: 9 (Fantastic)
“If you visit the Cameron Highlands and want a plastic, “I could be anywhere” experience, stay away from the Rain Forest Inn. If, however, you want a magical time in a wonderful place, a unique hotel that actually allows you to escape the everyday world and experience something of the place to which you have travelled, then book the Rain Forest Inn. We took a taxi to and from KL, and it was no problem. Moreover, with a bit of advanced notice, even if you don’t have a car, John and Gee Tat can arrange wonderful tours of everything you’ll want to see (e.g. the Mossy Forest, tea plantations, Orchid farms, strawberry farms, etc.). And if you just want to relax, you can spend the day at their private waterfall. In my view, you are utterly misguided to spend a penny more on accommodation in the Cameron Highlands: The Rain Forest Inn has everything a person needs!” – 10/10, Milo J.
Rain Forest Inn offers visitors a chance to go back to basic. Nestled in lush greeneries, buildings here were handmade by the indigenous Orang Asli adding to the authenticity of the whole experience. A thing to note though, this is not your typical hotel stay as amenities are basic at best with no toilets attached to rooms and shared bathrooms, but that is what you should come to expect from a place aptly named Rain Forest Inn – but having the chance to wake up to the sound of running water from the nearby stream and sounds of the wild more than makes up for it.

9. Penang, Georgetown: ST Hostel Georgetown
Price: From RM 92.62 with RM 25 cashback
Rating: 9.6 (Superb)
“We have been travelling now for five weeks, we have enjoyed just about all our accommodation in that time, but this was one of the truly standout places during our trip. We arrived in very late but that wasn’t a problem because they had someone patiently waiting for us.Tired and hungry we were quickly shown to our room and suggested a couple of good places to have a late night meal. Next morning it was raining and we wanted to go visit Penang Hill, we were told what bus to get on, provided with umbrella’s and driven to the bus stop as a favour. It was a rushed visit and we needed to get back and catch a taxi to get to the airport on time, they had a taxi arranged for us when we arrived back. I can’t say enough about how impressed we were with ST Hostel. The facilities were great, we had a really nice breakfast, but above all the hosts were just brilliant!” – 10/10, Vernon T.

11. Sarawak, Kuching: Hero Hostel
Price: From RM 42.88 with RM 25 cashback
Rating: 8.8 (Fantastic)
“We had a fantastic 1-night stay at the hotel. The hotel is run by a sole proprietor who was extremely friendly and helpful. He even sent us to the airport himself for a fee lower than normal taxi fare. The room was very minimalist but very clean and comfortable nonetheless. Wifi is free and fast. It’s located just a few minutes walk from some major tourist spots such as Tua Pek Kong, waterfront and the iconic cat statues. Great value! Will definitely book again! Highly recommended for budget travellers!” – Chang Q.

13. Johor, Johor Bahru: Eco Bed and Breakfast
Price: From RM 110.63 with RM 25 cashback
Rating: 9 (Fantastic)
“My wanderlust has led me to all corners of Malaysia and I can’t recall if I have ever had such wonderful hosts take care of us during our stay. My wife and I can’t say enough good things about Eco B&B. The B&B is clean and very well kept. Each room is unique and wonderfully whimsy (do request a tour if you didn”t get one). And breakfast is far more than a sit down with a fork and knife. The hosts have turned a waffle breakfast into an experience to delight both the mind and the taste buds! Eco B&B is situated within a gated and guarded community and is safe and secure. It is located some ways away from the busy area of town and can be a little difficult to find but like all treasures, it’s worth the effort.” – 8/10, Din I.
The only 9.0 rated hotel in Johor Bahru is also one of the most value for money.
