Not really. Kind of. Was it a date if we thought it was a date even though Brie Larson didn’t think it was one? Anyway, we did get to see Captain Marvel (from afar) and she was just as charismatic in real life as she most definitely will be in Captain Marvel.

Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” follows the journey of Carol Denvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

In this highly anticipated film, Brie Larson plays as Captain Marvel alongside Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Gemma Chan (Minn-Erva). The cast of Captain Marvel was joined by directors Ann Boden and Ryan Fleck in yesterday’s press conference at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore.

What to Expect in Captain Marvel

During the press conference, directors Boden and Fleck both shared with us what we could all expect from the film and that is a whole lot of action. Okay okay, that’s something that we all know to look forward to already. But here’s what’s more to expect: expect to go awwww (because hello, cat) and expect to tear up as you watch Denvers (Captain Marvel) go on an emotional journey of discovering herself.

Training for the Role of Captain Marvel

As Denvers go on this emotional journey, so did Larson who also went through a transformation while prepping for her part. Larson divulged that she didn’t want to simply mimic what female strength looks like from other films. Instead, she wanted to search within herself for meaning and infuse them into her character as Captain Marvel.

The training that actors have to go through for their on-screen roles could be brutal as their physical and mental strengths are pushed “beyond a threshold that’s comfortable and then going even further than that”. And Larson said that it was such experiences that she felt were what encapsulated Denvers as a character. Larson also shared with us her struggles with the action sequences in her “restrictive rubber suit”, sending us all in gales of laughter. But you wouldn’t have been able to guess at her discomfort given that Larson maneuvered so gracefully in it; so much so that the costume seemed like it was molded to her like a second skin.

From Crazy Rich Asian to Alien

Remember Gemma Chan from Crazy Rich Asian? She played Astrid; a sweet and gentle woman who was struggling to hold together her crumbling marriage.

In Captain Marvel, Chan plays the role of a badass, sarcastic alien, Minn-Erva — the complete opposite of Astrid. Chan expressed that the greatest challenge for the role was the physical aspect. Her part required her to start doing kick-boxing and sniper training — all while trying not to hit herself in the face with her rifle. No doubt we’d all be excited to see Chan kick ass in Captain Marvel.

Nick Fury 30 Years Younger?

Samuel L. Jackson! Jackson once again reprised his role as Nick Fury, esteemed Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D, who graced the stage adorned with his trademark Kangol hat. In this film, however, we will see a younger Nick Fury sans eyepatch. This younger Fury would have a lot less instinct than older Fury and we’ll see him learning a lot from Captain Marvel over the course of the film. Jackson and Larson share a chemistry that is apparent both off-screen and on-screen and it was fun watching their easy banter at the press conference yesterday.

Fun fact: Jackson would choose an eyepatch over a Kangol hat and a cape as his superhero eyetem (haha); it adds some mystery to his person, he says.

More Cat Footage in Captain Marvel Please

On what it was like working with the team of four cats who played Goose in the film, Larson and directors Boden and Fleck spoke of one of the cats, Reggie, as being “the face, the star, the heart and soul of the character”.

They reminisced about early on in the development process when producer Kevin Feige looked at the film outlines and proposed that they “100% need more of that cat in there”. And he got it! Perhaps they might one day make an entire film about Goose, who knows.
