1. Grooveshark

Grooveshark has about 13.2 million songs that you can literally groove to. Similar to other apps, you can have the free version with unlimited listening options but you’ll have to sit through the advertisements too.

Grooveshark can be experienced through its web app, as well as their Android app. The site works easily enough and is pretty minimalist. You start by typing the name of your favourite artist or genre and then start building playlists from there. Premium ad-free music is $2.99 ( about RM 12) per month.

2. Deezer

Deezer is actually a French music streaming site and they’re pretty big too. They currently have about 20 million songs, which is comparable to Spotify. They’re available on many platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows 7 phones, and Blackberry. Deezer’s free version is only unlimited for one month. After that, you can only listen free for up to 2 hours.

To enjoy unlimited streaming, you’ll have to sign up for their Premium ( RM 14.90 per month) or Premium+ ( RM22.35 per month) plans. Deezer is fully web-based so you can listen through any web browser app you have.

3. 8 Tracks

If you have about half an hour to kill and want to listen to just that little bit of music then 8Tracks is the site for you. It helps you pull together 8 or more of your favourite songs into a short playlist. It’s also a social media site where you can share your playlist and experience the other playlists that users have contributed.

4. SoundCloud

SoundCloud is a music streaming site that doubles up as a social interaction site. You’ll be able to discover a lot of good Indie music here since anyone can actually upload their songs onto the platform. SoundCloud actually started as a platform for creators and producers to share their music but is now attracting millions of listeners too.

5. Playlist

Playlist is available as an app only for iPhones at the moment. It’s a really unique platform where you can chat with your friends while listening to music. There are more than 40 million songs, and thousands of playlists to discover. There’s an option to create your own playlists too, and rate your favourite playlists and music.

6. Joox

Joox is one of the newest music streaming sites, and this time it’s geared towards the Asian market. This streaming site is available as an app on Google Play in addition to being on browsers. They have plenty of recommendation lists, and special sections for local Malaysian releases, Chinese language songs, J-pop and K-pop songs.
